Top surprising life expectancy pairs

  • Japan vs United States — Longevity leaders versus a large high-income peer.
  • Spain vs Germany — Southern Europe often edges northern peers by months, not years.
  • South Korea vs China — Rapid health gains can leapfrog regional expectations.
  • Chile vs Argentina — Neighboring countries can diverge more than map proximity suggests.
  • Italy vs Russia — European longevity clusters sit far above colder continental averages.

How scoring works

Compare life expectancy at birth in years. Guess whether the challenger country's average is higher or lower. Correct answers extend your streak; one miss ends endless mode.

Values are shown to one decimal place when helpful. The Life Expectancy Higher or Lower Game compares the underlying year figures from our World Bank snapshot.

Why the top of the table is hard

East Asia and Western Europe cluster tightly near the top. Gaps of less than a year are common, so intuition about "which rich country" often fails.

Larger spreads appear when comparing high-income clusters to regions still closing the health gap — those pairs feel easier, then the next round snaps back to a one-year nail-biter.

Data sources and snapshot date

Figures come from the World Bank indicator Life expectancy at birth, total (years). We publish a static snapshot for fair, repeatable gameplay.

Countries without a positive value in our pull are omitted so every Higher or Lower comparison has a clear answer.

Tips to extend your streak

Treat the high-income cluster as a photo finish — do not assume larger GDP always means longer life.

When two neighbors feel similar, expect a tight call; weighted pairing will lean into those as your streak climbs.
