Higher or Lower Blitz explained
What is Blitz mode?
Blitz is the arcade-style Higher or Lower mode: a countdown clock, rapid-fire pairings, and a score that only goes up when you guess right. Unlike endless mode — where one wrong answer ends your streak — Blitz keeps the run alive. A mistake costs three seconds from the timer, not your entire session.
Pick any category — population, area, density, GDP, GDP per capita, life expectancy, movie ratings, Google searches, or YouTubers — choose 60 or 120 seconds, and see how many correct guesses you can stack before time runs out. Personal bests are saved locally per category and per duration, so a strong 60-second run and a strong 120-second run are tracked separately.
How Blitz scoring works
Each correct answer adds one to your Blitz score. Wrong answers subtract three seconds from the remaining time but do not reset your score. The reveal animation is faster than endless or Daily mode so you can keep momentum. When the clock hits zero, your final score is compared against your personal best for that category and duration.
In the last ten seconds the timer turns urgent and a heartbeat sound plays (if sound is enabled) — a small nudge to trust your instincts and keep tapping Higher or Lower.
60 seconds vs 120 seconds
The 60-second Blitz is the classic sprint: ideal for a quick break, a shareable score, or warming up before a longer session. Most players land between eight and fifteen correct answers depending on category and luck with pairings.
The 120-second Blitz doubles the runway. Wrong-answer penalties matter more over a longer run, but you also get more chances to recover. Personal bests use separate localStorage keys (`hl:blitz:v1:{category}:60` and `hl:blitz:v1:{category}:120`), so you can chase records in both formats without one overwriting the other.
Who Blitz is for
Blitz suits players who want intensity without the permanence of endless mode's one-strike rule. It is also a great way to sample a category you have not tried — movie posters, search topics, and channel logos make curated categories especially visual in a timed run.
